Famous Role Models
Famous role models, from the first
women mathematicians
to the first
feminist rappers,
further enlarge the scope of life for all people, not just women, who work in their field. Women role models can be an inspiration to us all.

What makes famous role models worth emulating? Their fame? Their talent? Their musical prowess? Their contribution to society? What about the way they look, their fashion choices, even their personal appearance? All of the above, depending on your perspective, though fame, appearance, and contribution can be imitated, not emulated. What makes someone worth emulating--what makes them "an example"--is their behavior in difficult situations. You might admire an artist for her talent or a scientist for her intelligence, but inspiration comes from those artists, scientists, or "ordinary mortals" who defy injustice even when the odds are against them. In other words, you can only admire someone for who they are, but you can match or surpass them in what they do. Anyone who throws themselves over for some ideal is an inferior specimen, whatever they imitate. At the same time, no one can refrain from being influenced by other people, and what we believe is an original thought was likely expressed by someone else, long ago and more clearly. As Margaret Mead said, "Always remember, you are unique. Just like everyone else."
